AUDITION MASTERY FUNDAMENTALS:

The Intensive

with Ben Mathews

Audition Mastery: Fundamentals is an intensive two-day audition class designed to leave actors feeling deeply empowered, with the tools and mindsets necessary to book work. We explore the fundamentals of auditioning, both in the room and self-tapes. The course is also designed to uncover any limiting belief systems that might be holding actors back, eliminating them and replacing them with a transformed outlook that leaves actors feeling free, powerful, and fully self-expressed.

Be honest. When an audition comes in, how often do you stress yourself out before you've even walked in the room? Do you begin thinking about what the role could do for your career? Do you look at the amount of money you could earn and start thinking of all the ways you could spend it? Do you start to worry about whether you're what casting are looking for or about getting your performance "right"?

I know I've fallen into this trap, as have every other actor I've known. It's par for the course. But it's not helpful. We walk into the audition room and our nerves kick in, because suddenly there's this huge pressure — to get it right; to impress the casting director; to show our range or get emotional; to make that money; to book the job.

In other words, we end up focusing on the results of the audition, rather than the process of the audition itself.

This focus on results, rather than process makes actors less creative. They have less fun, feel more anxiety, get stuck in their heads, become overly cautious, less spontaneous, too controlled, and become afraid of screwing up.

FOCUS ON PROCESS AND THE RESULTS WILL COME.

Every audition is an opportunity. Not simply to get the job, but to do our job. It's an opportunity to make bold choices, take risks, practice our craft, refine our skills, do our very best -- and to let it go, so we can keep moving forward without attachment.

When actors focus on process and worry less about the results, their work becomes freer. They have more fun, take bigger risks, feel more relaxed, find spontaneity, listen and let go.

What if you went into the audition room not to get a job; what if you went in there to give. To give a performance, something of yourself, your best work, your talent, your interpretation, something unique, brave, original, compelling and interesting.

If you weren't there to get the job, but to give without expectation, would you need anything from them, the powers that be? And if you didn't need anything from them, how liberating might that be?

Audition Mastery is not about booking any one job, but mastering the process itself.

MASTER THE PROCESS AND THE JOBS WILL COME.

What we cover:

Deliberate practice is one of the most effective methods at achieving mastery at anything. For auditions, it's crucial. The audition process is an unavoidable part of every actor's career, and career success for actors requires success at auditioning.

Audition Mastery takes a process, rather than result-oriented approach to auditioning. We want our actors to become masters of the audition process, from how they prepare, to how they walk into the room, use the camera, give their performance and leave making an impression. By giving the actor a wide range of tools they can rely on, we aim to transform not only an actor's approach, but their entire mindset around the audition process to a deeply empowering one.

Over the two days, we'll cover the following:

DAY 1: The Art of the Audition: Standing Out & the Audition Mindset; Script Analysis & Camera Technique; Creating Character & Emotional Energy; The Callback; Troubleshooting.

DAY 2: Coming into The Room, Drama & Genre; Mining the Breakdown, Storytelling & the Art of the Monologue, Internal Landscape & Behaviour

In Addition:

What makes an audition truly memorable.

A practical, reliable approach to script analysis.

How to prepare and memorise lines effectively, without getting stuck in "line readings."

How to win the room, enter in a subtly confident way, and powerfully interact with casting directors.

Playing to the camera: the importance of eye-lines and vocal levels.

What to do when the script calls for movement in a scene.

How to give your character a sense of depth and scale, even when you don't have much information about them.

The one key ingredient that will book you the job over someone else when you're both right for the part.

The critical things about a project you should know before you audition.

Audition traps that actors routinely fall into and how to avoid them.

How to give a scene stakes to make the audience care more for your character.

The technicals of the self-tape.

Simple techniques to turn you into an active listener in a scene, creating real thoughts about what's happening in the moment, rather than an actor who simply waits for their next line.

How to find and create transitions, giving your character a journey and the scene an arc.

How to make truthful and grounded choices that go beyond the obvious, so you stand apart from other auditionees.

How to give a scene specificity, nuance and make your character feel like a 3-dimensional person.

How to use image work to give your character a sense of history and deepen your connection language your character uses and relationships to other characters in the story.

How to create cinematic 'moments' in a scene and make your work unforgettable.

How to find the right beginning and end to a scene.

What to do if you get a call-back.

Troubleshooting: how to I learned to stop worrying and love mistakes.
